![]() Such collaborative approach, based on a social constructivist view of translator training, has important pedagogical implications for areas such as translator competence, student motivation and learner autonomy. Making the most of their knowledge as fans as well as of their linguistic skills and socio-cultural awareness, students work in teams to produce interlingual subtitles for different episodes from a variety of TV series, including comedy, medical drama, crime and science fiction. This article describes a teaching project which investigates the potential benefits of integrating activities inspired by non-professional subtitling into a formal teaching context. The development of new digital technologies has led to the emergence of internet communities of non-professional translators who subtitle popular TV series and films using freeware and sharing their collective intelligence. The impact of technology on audiovisual translation has been enormous, and it continues to change not only audiovisual production and distribution models but also the profile of the translator and the concept of audience. Finally, the chapter anticipates future research could be sought to examine the cooperation and the tension between human agents and technology, and how that new forms of collaboration may alter the patterns of human collaboration and affect translation quality. The shift from silent to sound, from monolingual to multilingual, has certainly enriched the forms and terms in AVT, but the tension between entertainment and politics, of citizens’ creativity and of authority surveillance calls for more nuanced research. After a chronological account of collaborative translation practices, the author summarises the related approaches and implications in previous research. This chapter opens with revisiting ‘collaborative translation’, which is more specifically defined here as joint work made between ‘direct contributors’ in the production of a translation. Much conceptualisation remains to be done on the collaboration of translation in AVT, but the challenge lies in our vague knowledge of its process and identification of collaborators. Therefore, being a comprehensive study of the ways to convey cultural connotations of the original text by means of a foreign language on the level of fansubs, the research gives insight into the interconnection between the translation techniques used to render cultural references and the effect a target text may have on the audience. Moreover, the study delves into reasons underlying the choice of translation approaches by nonprofessional subtitlers, including the collaborative nature of the process, the lack of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, as well as the insufficient mastering of the target language. Thus, the comparative analysis of the Ukrainian films Chasing Two Hares (1961), Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) and Prayer for Hetman Mazepa (2001), and their English subtitles reveals the difficulties fansubbers may face, as well as discusses translations strategies and techniques employed. The fansubbing of proper names, culture-bound common nouns, formulaic sequences, sociolects and songs by the non-professional translators for whom English is a foreign language is the main focus of this study. The research addresses the issues of rendering culture specific information in amateur subtitling from the Ukrainian into the English language.
